When to call a doctor on the Costa del Sol — and who to call

A practical note on health on the coast.

Conserjio is by invitation only. We write here occasionally — about the work, the coast, and the way our members spend their time.

Members write to us about health more often than about almost anything else. Most of those messages come outside ordinary hours — a fever in the small hours, a slipped disc on a Sunday morning, a chipped tooth on the third day of a stay. What follows is the short version of how we think about it.

112 first, in a real emergency

The Spanish emergency line is 112. It is staffed in English, and it is the right call for chest pain, severe trauma, breathing difficulty, suspected stroke, and anything else that is plausibly life-threatening. Members sometimes write to us first out of habit; the answer in those moments is always the same — call 112, then call us, and we will meet you at the hospital with a translator and a driver if useful.

For everything else: a doctor at home

For the rest — the fever, the stomach bug, the recurring back, the urinary tract infection, the rash that arrived after a beach day — a private doctor at home is faster than a clinic and more comfortable than waiting. An English-speaking GP reaches Marbella addresses, the Golden Mile, Sierra Blanca, Sotogrande and the Estepona stretch inside an hour, day or night. Prescriptions are written on the spot; pharmacy delivery follows so the medicine arrives in the same window.

When a nurse is the right call

For series of treatments — IV hydration, dressings, post-surgical care — a private nurse is more useful than a doctor. We run the same nurse across a stay where the schedule allows, particularly for recoveries and elderly companionship.

Specialists worth knowing about

Three specialist routes catch members out. First, the dentist — for urgent care on a Sunday, we hold relationships with English-speaking dentists who answer the phone. Second, aesthetic medicine — Marbella is one of the better-developed cities on the continent for it, and we book the doctors quietly, often in-villa for consultations and at clinic for treatments. Third, the executive health check-up — bloods, imaging and specialist reviews bundled into a single morning, the kind of thing that London or Geneva schedules rarely permit.

A small note on hospitals

The two private hospitals members reach for most are HC Marbella and Quirónsalud Marbella; both are English-speaking, both used to international insurance. For acute cardiology and trauma, the public Hospital Costa del Sol in Marbella has the best 24-hour cover on the coast. We can be the bridge in either direction.

For the everyday things, write us on WhatsApp. The doctor at home page sets out the rest.
